About Makunduchi Village
Makunduchi is a large traditional settlement on Zanzibar’s southern coast, maintaining a distinctly local character with limited tourism infrastructure compared to the resort-heavy beach areas further north. The village is known for its traditional Swahili architecture, active fishing community, and the Mwaka Kogwa festival held annually in July, which marks the Shirazi New Year with communal celebrations, traditional mock battles, and cultural performances.
